Posts: 61 Location: Rogers, MN | Blew up my 03 Yamaha F90 due to operator stupidity...please don't ask for the story. Anywho, I've got estimates to rebuild for $5600 with a new powerhead or $3500 with a remanned powerhead. There's part of me that says part out my current motor - should be able to get close to $2k out of it - and then go buy a bit newer motor. Keep in mind, my boat has be a "tweener" boat getting me from my last boat that I had to sell through until I buy the boat I truly want in a year or two. So I really don't want to put tons of money into this boat. But I'm stuck. What to do? Looking for used motors is not easy. Suggestions there would be helpful, too.

Posts: 1209 | Blew mine up. Had a bunch of input saying resale doesn't like rebuilt power heads. And that being because even when done right they are still a crapshoot. So slapping a new power head on and trying to sell the blown one to a small engine guy would be my suggestion if you can't step off the deep end like I did. I traded my boat blown up for a brand new one. Probably shouldn't have but I loved the last 6 weeks with my new boat and motor, that feeling has been amazing and the dealer only dinged me 4500 off there prior offer before I blew it up, I couldn't resist.

Posts: 61 Location: Rogers, MN | Pointerpride102 - 11/19/2015 8:39 PM Let's hear the story. This is a safe place. :) First time with a four stroke. Didn't check the oil. Was burning oil. So I was down 3.5 quarts when it was all said and done. I was having some running issues. Motor would bog down when fuel tank got down around 1/2 tank. So we were looking at the fuel pick up, looking for air leaks. Never even thought about oil. There was a minor squeal down in the battery/fuel/bilge area. Two of us didn't recognize it as the alarm. It wa that quiet. Anywho...damage is done once we finally diagnosed. Tech told me to take it for a test run. 20 second in...BOOM!!

Posts: 13688 Location: minocqua, wi. | what model and year is the boat? there are a few options. if it's a tweener and your next dream boat uses the same hp, then a new f90 and you can swap power to anything you look for knowing you have a great motor and warranty. as a tweener and next boat is bigger/different altogether then, sell junk motor and re-power used and do your best selling it ... you should be able to find a used elpto merc reasonably and that won't sell the same as if you had the original f90, but it won't kill you either. if you suck it up and change your mind to keep it for long term, i'd re-power new and hope you get the $2k for your old motor vs. putting big money into an '03 in my case, i did a full re-power but mine was not a tweener ... was the one i plan to keep a long time. good luck ... as for used outboards, check eBay ... and hopefully you have a dealer who is tuned in. i got my situation handled by a dealer that shopped his network for overstocks. you should not have a problem finding used 90HP motors out there if that's the option you choose to go with.

Posts: 206 | If you're looking to upgrade to another boat then... okay consider fixing for awhile, getting by and eventually trading up. Otherwise if its a boat you plan to keep long term - REPOWER. Older engines with problems seem to continue with problems even after fixing. Yamahas are great but it would give you a chance to upgrade to a 4 stroke with EFI. I did that exactly 3 years ago - traded the 2002 4 stroke carb for a 2013 4s EFI. Life is great when you have a motor that actually starts below 45 degrees!!

Posts: 1086 Location: Hayward, WI | $3500 sounds pretty cheap for a 4 stroke reman powerhead, make sure you know what you are getting. You have all winter to try and find a motor. You can try going to boat show in Jan and talk to different dealers and see if they have any used motors to sell, they can be willing to deal at that time of year.

Posts: 859 Location: MN | First off sorry. Honestly I think you should just move on from the motor. Get a new one or pick something up used. I would think you should be able to get a newer motor with just a few years on it. Keep in mind the motor is 13 years old. Not saying it's old but it's not new either

Posts: 61 Location: Rogers, MN | So my buddy and I want to try the rebuild ourselves. He's a major motorhead. But what manuals/instructions do we need?

Posts: 1086 Location: Hayward, WI | You would need a service manual at the very least. You probably are not going to save all that much trying to do it your self. The majority of the expense is going to come from parts and having a machine shop work on the crank, block and head, which you are still going to have to get done. That is if any of those parts are salvageable, it really depends on what actually failed.
