I think my charger is not working correctly. Is there an easy way to check?

What is happening is this. I plug it in, and the green status light and the red charging light come on. I come back in 12-18 hrs, and the red light is off. When I check though, the battery gauge on the trolling motor does not come up. I can then plug it back in, both lights come on again. They will stay on for quite awhile again, but the gauge still does not come up.

Any help/ideas would be appreciated.

I would start with having your battery(s) load tested first.

Battery is brand new, if that makes a difference.

What brand charger do you have? On my Minn Kota charger, the red light means the battery is dead, and the charger will not charge it. If they are dead, I'd have to use a portable charger to put some charge on them before the onboard charger would take over.

Or, have you tested the charge of the battery? The trolling motor indicator might not be working properly.

I have not tested the charge of the battery. I do not have a tester. The trolling motor does work, so there is certainly still some charge in it.

If I disconnect the charger from the battery, plug it in, and test the leads, is there something I can look for that way?

I can't remember the brand of the charger (will check tonight), but it seems like I remember reading the manual, and it stating that it was supposed to work the way I said. With the green light on and the red light on when charging.

Have you checked the inline fuse(s) for your charger? The fuses inbetween the charger and the battery? I had one blow once and it gave me a red light like it was charging, but only for about 10 secs. If I looked at it right away it looked like it was charging, but it wasn't. After 10 secs, it showed green, but the battery hadn't gotten charged. Popped in a new fuse and all is well.

I will check the fuses. Thanks

Just another thought. Would it make a difference that I have my accessories (bilge pump, livewell, lights, fish finder) wired to the deep cycle battery that I am trying to charge?

Won't keep the battery from charging, no.
