Alright guys here is my dilema. Getting new electronics soon and not sure wich to get. I can get the 998 $140 cheaper than the 999 but am told the 999 has faster processor. Also have read some like the 998 better. Going to be using it mostly on flowages and rivers but do fish a few larger lakes. Wich would you choose and why? Also do i need to order any extras other than a ram mount? Thanks fkr you time and replies. Russ

The 998 dose have a faster processor other than that I don't know if there is a difference I have 11 9'8 and am happy with them .if I had to replace them I would look at the new onix.

999 has the faster processor and an Internal GPS antenna- I believe that the GPS position is also updated 10 times per second vs 4 for the 998 with the external antenna.
I bought the 998 C HD SI last spring and love the detail. It was very easy to get started with. Now I want a second Humminbird.
Both units have the larger High Definition Transducer- If you mount it according to directions you would probably want a High Speed transducer and the Y cable to hook both of them up to the unit. This allows you to get great readings while running across the lakes- lots of people ask why they get lousy views at high speed - thus the second transducer.
I found lots of great information on setup and use of my locator at the Bass Boat Central websight. Great forums on both Lawrance and Humminbird.
Good Luck

Steve

the 999 also has a brighter screen with better contrast and visibility in bright/sunny conditions.

i don't think the differences are enough to go out and upgrade from 998 to 999, but when purchasing new i think it's worth going with the better units for that relatively modest price difference. Humminbird is offering very nice rebates on the 999 and 1199 models right now to make room for the Helix/Onix/Ion models in the supply chain. i wasn't sold on the value/cost of the Onix units in comparison to the 999/1199 ones, so i'm rigging my new boat with networked Core (xx9-series) units.

Only difference is internal GPS and apparently faster
I just bought an 899 unit. It is one size down. I had to upgrade the ducer for 90$. All in it was 1100 CDn. I like internal GPS personally.
It needs a RAM mount for sure.
I wanted the 999 but it was not in my budget.
The 999 has a 200 rebate right now. U likely know that. If the 998 is still cheaper with this discount then I would buy the 998.

Thanks guys. I know about the rebate but wasn't sure if you get rebate even if you purchase unit online. I have found best prices at digital oasis and outlet store. If I still get the rebate on top of that price then the 999 would be cheaper by a lil bit in the end. I'm upgrading from an old pirahna series that finally died so it's a huge upgrade and wanta get it right the first time. Thanks again for all your help guys.

If you mount it up front by the trolling motor, I would highly recommend getting the external GPS puck with Heading Sensor. With the Heading Sensor, your boat will always be positioned correctly on the map.

Was thinking it was something that i would need to add at some point. For now unit will be back by the tiller on a ram mount. Just got a new yamaha 4 stroke for the ol girl also so I'm out of play money for awhile. I will be getting a chip for it though.

I just checked again and it looks like they are out of stock on the non-KVD model... Looks like they have 19 left of the KVD model... Guess its pretty much the same unit... Looking to purchase in the next few days. Thx.

I just pull the trigger and order it. They actually restocked the regular model since yesterday and had 11 of them now. Would rather have the no gimmick one, so that's what I got. Hopefully it will be here by the end of the week. Thanks for your help.

Yes, got it before the weekend. Already got the transducer installed and cable ran to the console. Also, got the big ram mount setup installed. If you power on without the transducer plugged in will it automatically go to simulator mode? and will setting changes be saved? Can wait to get out on the water... maybe in a few weeks... lakes still ice covered but melting fast, hopefully will be all gone in the next week.
