Is a handheld marine radio adequate to fish tournaments? Any recommendations?

At least 7-10 of the guys use portables. There are times when it's no good, but you can usually get a judge by cell too. I had a big antenae 3 boats ago, but I used to cast my baits into it about 3 times a day

I've always used a hand held radio... No problem... plus they usually Hear me Yelling or whistling for them.

We use them also, cell phones and all else fails start doing jumping jacks. Wouldn't mind doing a lot of them. Any other time you'd be an idiot but at that point who cares you have a fish in the bag.

LBF....skip the jumping Jacks...once seen, it can not be unseen...

Hand radio will suffice...

I've had 2 over the last 10 yrs. Lowrance is the better choice.

Bought one of these for myself for IMTT this year. Still have several left at the Bass Pro Outlet located in Springfield,Mo. They may also ship as well. Seems like a good quality, heavy radio marked down to 49.00 from orginal price of 119.00

Had one of those, worked fine but you have to keep track of the battery. At first, you'll charge the thing and three months later it's still fine. Two years later you'll charge it, think it's fine, and it won't last the tournament or a day. Charging indicator won't help you know. For fifty bucks, use it two years and discard. Personally, I only keep trolling motor batteries two years.
