I make bucktails and I noticed some of the skirts spin and get twisted up, reeling them in. The are pre-tied tinsel skirts tied on coil springs. I've tried bending the front loop, wedging a toothpick and super gluing it. How do you guys prevent the spinning?
Thanks,
John

Put a bell sinker on the shaft or whatever the front hook may be attached to the shaft.

Ok, thanks Todd. I usually don't have a front hook, because my bucktails are usually double 8's, with a smaller profile, but I'm going to try a front hook, now!

I do this with my Customs;

you can shrink tube if extra coil (extending ) out from below tinsel, to wire shaft! OR

You can also pich a solid bead to the shaft, and shrink tube to that....OR

You can use a keel weight, and also shrink tube coil to wire shaft....OR

I also take my side cutters.....pinch the last turn on the coil just enough so when you put wire through, there is tension on wire/ coil.

You do no need a front hook, just add the bell sinker where the a front book would be. JD has some great suggestions too.

I usually just bend the eye of the bucktail so it's angled. That usually fixes that problem.

I don't see an issue with them spinning. Why make it more complicated than it has to be?

try putting a weight on the shaft mid placement to the blades or touching the skirt. This should stop spinning.

I lost a 50 plus last night cause I didn’t have the top hook. Only chance I would of had. Wish I had video. T-boned it from the side right next to the boat. You could see the back hook hangin out. Snagged him in the side of the mouth for about 2 head shakes and away he went. Cool it was on my first homade bucktail though. 9” dble 9 fluted the tinsel is spinning about ever other cast so gonna fix that tonite. Gonna try pinching the coil or alittle bob smith glue. Looks like the clear spacers on the cowgirls maybe are stopping that from spinning. I have 3 egg sinkers on it also. I used some coils for spacers on the bottom half and only 1 tie on tinsel so maybe that’s why it spins so bad

That 50 didn't care... Myself, I'd leave well enough alone after that encounter. Just add a front hook.

AR nailed it... if the fish are eating it, leave it alone.

Thanks I was thinking same thing. I did glue the conduit to shaft. Still wraps. And added a 7/0 black nickel Vmc inline single hook above the tinsel. So it’s not spinning on the shaft. Last night I looked and the tinsel is too high. Goes to the top of the blades almost. So just gonna trim some off the top. If that doesn’t fix it I’m leaving it. It’s double #9 fluted Indiana’s and the blades don’t appear to be too close to the tinsel.

Shorter shirts may cause more problems getting sucked into the vortex and hitting the blade. Do the blades touch the skirt when held perpendicular? If not, you're ok, so be careful trimming it. Flashabou can be a pain. Some colors friz up easily from the sun, not just spinning.

Assuming ur using magnum flashabou for the material. I stopped using the "holographic" stuff because that's the stuff that wraps and tangles. When it's wet and then dries it knots up. I build everything now with the regular magnum, anything non holographic and that stuff doesn't tangle. I also put a piece a shrink tubing over the shafts of the top treble to keep the material from getting in between the hook bends on the treble.

The holographic stuff has nice flash to it but the regular stuff has a more mirror-like look and fish don't seem to care.

i use airbrake tube and i have never seen them turning,it's the perfect size ,because there is no space between the wire and the tube.that why i don't use the spring.and these airbrake hose will last a lot longer than you blades and the materiel on it.i use them since at least 15 years and i have never seen one that have been destroyed
