Does the american side offer just as much opportunity as the Canadian side?
Looking to fish lsc for the first time this coming season and trying to decide if I should purchase a Canadian license or not. During the walleye run muskies are caught in the Trenton, mid river in front of Great Lakes steel, and numerous other places. I know my way around the river from the spring run. Is it possible to slowly troll up river? Working baits at certain depths on the shipping channels. I know jigging bondys is probably the number 1 way to target the river fish. Then on lsc I always read the Candidan side is better but have also read the dumping grounds are good place to start or even anchor bay. I have Heard that looking at satellite images of lsc and start in the the stained water is also a good place to start. Does anyone have any good insight for a lsc beginner wanting to fish the river or lsc for musky. any information would greatly be appreciated
Thanks

Hey man. I would assume you are talking about the first half of the season when I say the US side is just as good. In the river, it seems casting buck tails if its cloudy (and the weeds aren't to the surface), jigging Bondy's all day, especially if its sunny, and trolling deep with spoon plugs or inline weighted deep cranks are the primary methods. I would say I fish Ontario 55% and Mich 45% roughly...so worth it to have both. Good luck!

The dumping grounds have produced some 20 fish days for me in the past there. I would recommend getting both licenses that way you're not restricted once you're out there. If there are legal reasons you cannot cross the border, then yes, the American side is obviously your best bet.

I have no knowledge on the river, but there are fish everywhere on LSC. The south shore (Canadian) is definitely the numbers area, but you can catch fish anywhere on the lake.

I will be fishing St. Clair this summer and may consider fishing the Canadian side. Is all I need a license for Ontario to do so? As long as I don't anchor or dock that is. Anyone have a link to the regs handy?

Seems like i will be getting and Canadian license!! I was told if you get the special drivers license in Michigan you don't have to call in ahead of time to fish is that true? What are the regulations for crossing? Thanks guys

Also I'm talking all seasons not just early but mid and fall! I live about a 1-1/2 away it's nothing to come fish. I see lots of videos in front of the salt pile if that is what it is on the Candidan side river channel at the mouth.

It's best to fish the Ontario side unless there's something on your record that Canada doesn't like.

If you want to catch numerous sub 30-inch fish then Anchor Bay is the place to be. You'll get to the point that you don't want to bother catching the sub 30's that when you have a follow you'll pull your lure out of the water to prevent them from biting & the fish will jump out of the water & hit your bait.

That's not true, see the link Zib provided. The requirement for passport or enhanced DL isn't a Candian requirement that's a US requirement.

Not quite; once having crossed into Canadia, the US may want to verify you when you come BACK to the US. That's when you'll wish you had a passport or an EDL. I have seen occupied US Customs vehicles sitting/watching at MI DNR launches... who knows what watching out for.

Not if you answer "YES" to having $10,000 or more on you. Due to being married with kids I never have that problem.

Of course. I guess what I meant was, who knows what YOU might do that might make them want to inspect YOU. Maybe you meet up with another boat in Canadia, maybe just to ask them to snap a pic for you. Might look suspicious to those whose job it is to be suspicious. Next thing you know, they're giving you a proctological inspection.

I spent all last winter trying to figure it out and found it to be as clear as mud with different answers from different agencies .
I do know that on the Larry the US Coast Guard and the Horsemen are riding around in the same boat checking papers especially at night. I do know that there is a drone up there that can probably verify the length of your fish if you need a witness. I have a friend that I regularly fish with that had Canadian Customs waiting for him at the dock because he left Canadian water and didn't phone in when returning to Canadian water.

On Tues March first the Gananoque chapter of Muskies Canada will have members of the Canadian US joint task force RCMP, US Coast Guard, Customs, OPP, OMNR etc at our meeting at 7:00pm Gan Legion to answer our questions. We would invite all interested fishermen from both sides of the river to attend.

From good source, the call in regs are changing again for 2016.

Last weekend at the London fishing show, CANPASS reps stated they will be requesting a passport number or Enhanced DL now. As shared above, in 2015 - This was NOT the case. Will see how it pans out.

Concerning US Customs, the cars/trucks along shore. They act on suspicion, if they witness something. But, they are VERY informed via radio, by air and camera, what is happening across the entire body of water. SANG is their command center.

Fishing is good on both sides. Just depends time of year.
