With the season closing here in Minnesota in less than two weeks I'm looking to read up on muskies during the offseason. What are some good muskie books and lengthy articles? Can be all things related muskies- tactics, stories, biology, etc.

Wow...there is a TON of stuff out there in the literature on Muskies. PM me if you're interested, and I'll give you my cell number. I must have 50-60 papers, along with a few books on fish in general. I don't know how in-depth you want to get in terms of physiology though, which is the subject of many of the papers I have. But I also have several other (non-physiology) papers as well--like on population dynamics, catch & release mortality and some stuff on tracking. So I can certainly point you in the right direction.

A great book to check out is the musky symposium book, if you can find one. They were published through Muskies Inc after the symposium they sponsored about 10 or so years ago, and had a bunch of articles from the musky literature. That would be a great place to start. I don't know if they are still available through MI though, but that's where I got mine. Finally, there's a discussion thread on the Sosin/Clark Through the Fish's Eye in the Biology section.

So there is a LOT of stuff out there--more than enough to fill a winter.

My favorite musky book, by far, is Time on the Water by Bill Gardner. It's subtitle explains it all-One man's quest for the ultimate musky. It not a how-to or where-to by any means. It's really a journal, but extremely well written as the author is also a journalist. You might have to borrow a copy or maybe find it in a library as it was published about 20 years ago and the cheapest copy I've found for sale was over $400.00. Well worth the pursuit.

Luckily, you can get it on a kindle if you do E-books. That's how I was able to read it. Great book though. Another good book on muskie is Dick Pearson's Muskies on the shield. Great read, very good techniques if you're ever wanting to hit LOTW.

And it's about $75 on paperback now too, used on Amazon. I bought a copy a few years ago for around $50 (used) as I recall, but it was in near-perfect shape.

I’d rather read papers on musky psychology than musky physiology.

You may as well study the psychology of the human female, while you're at it. It would be about as difficult...

120 days is another good read, as is Tom Gelb’s Musky Strategy. I have both as well as time on the water and muskies on the shield...sorry I won’t part with any of them.

Funny you guys would comment on the female psyche, my lady told me last week she knows there are only 4 things that “Drive” me.... in no particular order: fishing, food, sex, spending time with her...she also told me I would never understand her!!! Hahahaa!!! I guess I’d rather read about musky psyche as well!!!

To my knowledge, it only came in a softbound version. I bought one of the first copies out there and it was softbound. Man, I searched Amazon and Abe's Books about a year ago as I wanted to buy a copy to give to my musky guide as a Christmas present. $400.00 was the lowest I could find. I'll have to try again!

Wow. I went back and checked Amazon. It sure looks different than it did a year ago. Now most of the used copies are about $80.00, which is still $$$ but way better than $400.00. Still maybe more than I want to spend for a gift to a guide, but I'm at least thinking about it.

Looked for 120 days on Amazon and on Half-Price books on-line. Cannot find it. Do you have an author or anything else that could help refine the search?

120 Days was written by Bill Hamblin, and you can get thru the Musky Hunter web site among other places.

Thanks. I did a Google search and found the places listed there as well as a referral to a thread on this site from 2015. Since I was about six months away from stumbling over this site I hadn't seen that thread. I'll be picking this book up at one of the winter shows.
