Yesterday I clicked on a a video on facebook and got a RED screen saying my computer was locked. It was claiming to come from Microsoft and was asking for username and password or to call a phone number. I managed to back out and everything seemed ok . However this morning I tried to play a utube video and had no sound so I tried to play some music on my computer and it also had no sound. It said that the file was a format not recognized

How do I get to a screen showing all my files with file extensions particularly music
Any other ideas
Thanks
Jeremy

Frank, sorry I can't help you but for me I'd do a total shutdown/reboot as opposed to a simple restart and see if that doesn't help. This sort of stuff has me taking my system in to my trusted 'puter guru.

So after pulling this and twisting that a couple kicks and 3 restarts my sound is working. I think the time has come to buy second laptop to be used only for banking, bill paying and my self directed investment accounts.

That's usually how these types of situations correct themselves.

At the very least everyone should have some sort of anti-virus like AVG, the basic version is free and does a decent job of keeping most of the bad out.

A second laptop strictly for bills/banking/etc is never a bad idea, just make sure that you've got it secured/protected as well.

If you are using Windows 10, Windows Defender should be available.

It wasn't flagged by my up to date McAfee. I see the video is no longer there.

I always envision anti virus company's of having 2 big rooms. One containing programmers writing anti virus programs for income and one creating virus's to create demand

For future reference, when all else fails do a "system restore" back to the day or week before the change occurred. I'm far from a computer guru but it has saved me in the past and is easy to do.

if you want to make sure everything is fine on your computer download malware bytes(its a free down load and run a scan to search your registry and drives for malware. it takes 10 min to do but that way you know your computer is not infected.

Frank: Happened to me twice...same message. Second time I just quickly shut off the computer and when I turned it back on, the message was gone and computer was fine.

free makes me nervous what's their incentive

I've heard of free programs that put other crap on your computer

computers are no longer the greatest thing since sliced bread, as much bad as good.

This. I still get billed by mcafee many years later and they are under a class action lawsuit over it.

Rule #1: Never click on or in a window or frame to close an unwanted intruder. That simple act can activate what is known as a "driveby download". Most often it's some dopey, resource hogging toolbar or re-director. Worse case could be, well, anything.

I usually go to the tray at the bottom of the screen, right click and select close window or exit. If dialogue presents that asks if you really want to leave the page, do not click on it, just leave it till last. When you have everything closed you can close shut down your PC, count to 30, tap a few of the keys (especially "Enter") and start things back up. Sometimes I'll just use the power button to crash that problem window. Sure, you can lose "unsaved" data but if everything else legit you had open closed OK everything you need is saved.

I've been using MSE (Microsoft Essentials) and Malware Bytes w/Win7. Never had a serious problem.

Free means you just get the bare bones program and in many cases that's really all you need. You will get come-ons from time to time to "trial" the "Premium Edition". Of course that's pay to play.

I've used AVG, Avast, Spyware Search & Destroy and Malware Bytes. All have free versions and all are legit operations.

You are right to be skeptical of "free". My wife had more trouble and most of the time it was adware/spyware that came with free eCards, smileys or some sort of cutsey junk that would lure her in. If you have a question use the Al Gore International Library (Internet) to research a bit. It's not hard. I've pretty much trusted CNET for reasonable opinions on stuff like this.

When I run Windows (SolidWorks only runs in Windows...sigh), I use Microsoft's Security Essentials. Seems to work pretty good, as long as you keep its database up-to-date. It's free though. But the best thing I've found to prevent any malware or viruses in Windows...is Linux. You can certainly still get some javascript code with a bad attitude to complicate your life, but it can't install anything in the Linux OS without having admin privileges by default.

In all fairness to Windows, if folks would take the time to set up a "user" account without admin privileges, and force themselves to use that non-admin account, I think they'd have a LOT fewer problems. But the default user account has administrator privileges, and we're a nation of click-happy computer users with a penchant for impatient browsing activities. And those two things don't make for trouble-free computing...

I've not had any issues using Kaspersky Total Security in the 6-7 yrs I've used it but I don't go clicking around on unsavory sites either.
Not saying that you did but even FaceBook doesn't guarantee anything so I'm cautious there too so...

Otto, thanks for all those hints. I have made notes of what you shared.

Exactly this. 100% correct to be suspicious of free, but with these they are the basic versions with intent of getting you to purchase more protection at some point, and as so you'll get the occasional message to upgrade. The "basic" free version however will protect you from most of the everyday issues.

All 4 of the mentioned free versions are pretty highly rated, and probably better than what you've got now
