I'm very new to the sport of casting unfortunately im one of the 10% who is left handed. I own a Revo HS and a Revo Winch but I'm currently looking for a left handed reel I can use for burning bucktails(10's)/rubber. Anyone have any suggestions?

Price Range ? with levelwind a Saltist 30HA, under $190.00 is a good choice, solid, and a lot of torque but quite a bit larger and heavier than what you may be used to. But this is a right handed reel... sorry Mike Jr

U don't need a 30 Saltist OVERKILL go with the 20 Saltist but they don't come in LEFT
Look at the Lexa 400 when the left hand reels come out.

I use nothing but the Sweedish made Abu's , stay away from the Chinese made junk. The left handed models end in the number 1. Like 6501, 5501, Record 61 etc.

Shimano CALCUTTA 401 D
Best reel I have ever owned. Had to go go out and buy a second one because everytime I picked up one of the Abu's they felt broken in comparison. Unbelievably smooth and best drag I have ever experienced. A bit pricey but I'm assuming they will last alifetime. This from a guy who owns 9 Swedish Abu's.

If you won't something to really burn big blades, you need something a bit more powerfull then the tings mentioned here.

I would take a look at a Avet, or just learn to fish with a right hand reel. It doesn't take that long to get used to.

look around I found a used 401 TE last year. paid around 250 . given a choice ill take my 400 TE's over my 400D . I bought the 401 for my niece to use . maybe its just me but the TE just seems to be a better reel.

Sigh...Ford, Chevy, Dodge. Maybe we should have Calvin stickers for reel manufacturers. I can burn D10s with an NACL 61 just fine, however I prefer my old Toro 61, which is 5.4:1 or whatever, but I added an aftermarket handle that adds a half inch in length.
I observe there's a lot of Belgian shotgun fans when it comes to muskie reels. A Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 or Benelli Nova does the same thing and you can buy four of them for the cost of one fancy-lad gun. The ducks, and the muskies, don't know the difference.

Thanks for all the input. I was looking at the new Lexa's but I've read that people don't think they can hold up to the abuse of burning 10's. Too bad Tranx's aren't left handed!

There is nothing wrong with quality. If you can afford 500 dollars for a reel buy it. Believe it or not there is a difference between a cheap reel and a expensive reel . I started out with a cheaper reel did not last. started working over time bought my first Shimano 400 TE never looked back . I have been a Shimano guy ever since . Abu Garica makes some nice reels also . Buy what you can afford . Better reels will have better gears , better gears will be smoother and last longer.

If you're left handed, why not use a "right-handed" reel? I would think you'd want to hold the rod with your left and and crank with your right.

Do you switch hands after you cast?

My Curado 300s have held up just fine for 3+ years now. I use a left and right handed, but always use my right hand for casts and figure-8s. Only went that route because I found a left-hand retrieve Curado 300 on clearance for 1/2 off. Didn't take long to adjust, and it's kind of a nice rest to alternate hands.

And I'd agree that the expensive reels do make a difference, if nothing else they make things easier and more enjoyable.

Do you really want to burn them? I see lots of people each year that think they're burning a bucktail when in reality they're just bulging a bucktail - HUGE difference.

If you really want to burn then you're really limited in the reels that will work. Many of the reels noted so far simply aren't fast enough to truly burn a bait when they only take up 26-30" of line per turn. Look for something that takes up at least 36" per turn and you'll have a reel capable of burning a bucktail.

The reels noted by Pikemaster are a good place to start.

agree w Will on this one...I fished w a sort of big name guide this past September and he started off the day buy telling us that he was "really burning his bucktails" to get the fish to bite... he was using a Revo Winch trying to reel it 100 mph... I think the lightbulb went off when he stood next to me mid day and I purposely made my cast at the same time and distance as he did and he saw how much sooner I had my bucktail to the boat using a Tranx. (guessing he has one by now lol) some guys think they are burning em when in reality they are only reeling fast, not making the bucktail move fast...

I can reel with both hands but I get way more power in my hookset when I'm holding the rod in my right hand.
It just seems the # of options for good left handed reels that pick up a lot of line are very limited. I feel like I'm the only left handed Muskie fisherman, lol! Thanks for all the responses guys, the season can't get here soon enough!

Can't comment on the Okuma Citrix, but would the Curado at 6.2 be the best choice for speed/quality at the present time, for those of us who prefer the left handed retrieve?
