Posts: 397 Location: Wisconsin | Opinions on your favorite buff or sun scarf? I absolutely hate wearing them in the heat and sun (what they are meant for) and sweating in them and breathing into them, tight around the face, making me even hotter and more sweaty. Anyone run across one that has more mesh in the mouth or ones that hang more loosely and not skin tight?

Posts: 735 Location: Apparently where the Muskie aren't | I agree they can get a little gross when it's wicked hot out. But, hear me out here, if you take the original buff, and soak it in icy cooler water and then wear it, it feels great and will keep you cool for 40 minutes. What I do is I get 2 and I just put one on and have one in the cooler, and then swap them out every 45 minutes or so. Also, I do not pull it up over my mouth and nose when it is hot out because your breath heats it up. I just wear a ball cap and pull the buff up to just under my mouth. I'm fully protected from the sun and when you dip it in the cooler every once in a while it cools your whole body like you wouldn't believe. Just this weekend, here in northern Illinois (it was in the high 90s all weekend) I was wearing one and my buddy thought I was crazy but I gave him one to try and on the way home we stopped at bass pro to pick him up 2 more. I'd give it shot, the moisture on your skin will be just a little uncomfortable but you forget about it when it cools you down. Good luck !

I use sun screen but for whatever reason, my ears have taken a beating and my doctor was concerned at my last physical. They pretty much peel year round. I bought a CoolNES neck and ear protector and it seems to work well. You wear it with any billed cap, attached with an elastic strap around the front of the cap and protects the ears and neck but is not tight on either. Wore it the other day when it was in the upper 80s and it was quite comfortable. I figure the French Foreign Legion wore something like that in the desert, must have worked for them.

Posts: 299 | Simms has one that cools 30% when wet. They call them "Sun Gaiters" and this one is new for 2018 with breathable holes near mouth. Maybe check out this option. Edited by detroithardcore 5/30/2018 7:10 AM

Posts: 306 | SA makes some decent ones, but they tend to be inconsistent with the size. My favorite is a HooRag I got from Amazon. Not nearly as tight as the SA, and seems to be a little lighter material. They work great for cold weather (hunting, skiiing), too, as they break the wind really well.

Posts: 176 | I like the Frogg Togg's buff, it's thin, flexible, I can role it down easy and after my dad's skin cancer on his ear I promised my mom I'd wear something over my neck and ears when I could. These were the least invasive I've worn so far and I've worn several since my promise to my mom. (I have a vested interest in Frogg Toggs, just to put that disclaimer out there) This is from one of my week long canoe trips for Musky in the back country. You can see by my ears and neck that it isn't the normal dark brown leather color...okay you haven't seen photos from the past, but normally my neck and ears would be the color of a 20 year old dark brown leather belt. On these trips I can't afford to carry the extra weight or gear that doesn't work. Cooler than any scarf I have used in the past and fits my big melon (Hat size 7 7/8) Edited by Mojo1269 5/30/2018 10:07 AM

Posts: 479 Location: Northern Illinois | I take a buff scarf because they are long and cut out holes for eyes and mouth ala Pete Maina. Not hard to get used to and wet it to keep cool.
