If ordering a new boat and given your choice between a 115 hp Yamaha Vmax or Suzuki, which would you choose? The dealer carries both and the boat can be rigged with either. I am just starting my research on the two motors and am looking for additional opinions before making a decision.

Hiya,

I think much of this depends on what you are looking to get out of the engine. By and far, the Yamaha will have much better low end torque due to the fact it is a 2 stroke, so power is made much quicker.

Efficiency-wise, I'd think the Suzuki will take that because it is a 4 stroke.

Maintenance....I'd say either one. With the yamaha, you are running a mixed fuel with oil, but it will have a reservoir to fill if memory serves me correctly, so you are not having to mix at all. No oil changes, and winterizing fairly simple.

With the 4 stroke, you will have oil changes...

I think it is really a toss up on this one... Myself...I'd go with the 2 stroke for the low end umph.

the Yamaha 115 is a 4 stroke too.
both are great motors, the Suzi has a 6 yr warranty, Yamaha is 5.

My current boat has a 115 Suzuki with a 20 hp Suzuki kicker. My previous boat had a 70 Suzuki and the one before that had a 60 Suzuki absolutely no problems. Changing oil and filter before layup in the fall takes no longer than changing the lower unit oil. The filter is only called for about every third oil change but I change it every time only a couple of bucks. I have never owned a Yamaha but friends put many hours on them you probably can't go to far wrong with either. My preference is 4 stroke and in my case it comes down to dealer you don't have that consideration.

Holy crap I missed that one big time!! I read Vmax and didn't even process the 115hp...totally had it in my head for the 2 stroke HPDI series...

Time for new glasses!!

Yes...comparing 4 strokes here...

I'm a Yamaha guy and have been since 1989 but I'd have to opt for the Suzuki here given the details. Both a fine motors...

Great to have this choice isn't it.

I'm guessing the Suzuki costs somewhat less and has an extra year warranty and like I said mine have all been flawless. Both great motors.

I run Yamaha, as do some friends, with no issues. That would be my choice.

I've got a Yamaha on my boat and ran a Suzuki on the work boat for 4000+ hrs through the worst of everything that has now been replaced by a Mercury. Both the Yamaha and Suzuki are/were trouble free so far. Only thing that stopped the Suzuki was a concrete form truck on Highway 41 in Milwaukee (and I bet it still would have ran, ended up scrapping the entire rig & truck).

No problems with Yamaha, but I would lean Suzuki if you have a nearby service center - sipped gas, quite, and never a problem. I only completed the break-in on our new Merc for work last fall, but feel it will be a great motor as well.
