Hi All,
I am looking to start making my own bucktails. My lovely wife has offered to get me materials to start my new adventure for my birthday. I am wondering if one of those starter kits from Thorne Brothers would be a good decision or if I should get items as I need them. Thanks for all the advice, I am very excited and sure this is the first of many stupid questions.

Thanks
Andy L

The best thing I think you can do is one look at moore lures to decide what you want to make. Then call Dick and speak with him about it and order your parts from him. As for a vise that depends but I got a cheap one from cabelas and use a piece of wire to hold my coils. I'm in the area let me know if I can help.

lurepartsonline is the best place, but your going to need to detailed list of what to buy, I would make double #10's
and your going to have to practice bending the heavy wire shaft it not easy

1. mag colorado blades #10 (I would not use the thin ones!!)
2. use heavy looped wire they are pre tired at one end
3. heavy clevis
4. mag bodys or beads
5. pre tied mag flashabou
6 heavy split rings
7 solid metal beads
8 egg sinker
9 treble hooks 2 per
and im sure i missed something

Some nice toys once you get into the swing of it:

Heat Gun for shrink wrap - $20 at local home improvement or hardware store
Round Nosed Pliers, Knippex makes a nice pair, but any will do, ~$30
Lure Former for making wire rings, $40
Bucktail Vice $40, I'm sure there are lots of options
Sally Hanson's Hard as Nail, $3 at Target/Walmart, in the woman's make up section. Have fun buying it, LOL! Seriously though, this stuff is gold for securing line ties. It is perfect.

None of that is a necessity, (Except the Hard as Nails, I won't tie without it.) but it helps clean up parts of the process. Something I started doing this year was putting 5 minute Epoxy on my ties, when using marabou, feathers, and other stuff like that. (I wouldn't do it on a traditional flashabou tie.) It adds a step to the process, but especially on the final tie, it REALLY looks sharp. You can add paint or glitter to it for some extra personal touch.

Make sure you fish your baits next season. The first fish on a lure you make yourself is a very satisfying and memorable experience.
