I am looking into the new Tranx offset reels, the 300/400 series. I noticed that in the higher gear ratio models, 7.6:1 that it has less drag force (18lb) than the lower gear ratio models 5.6:1 has a drag of 22 lbs.

Just curious as to why that would be. What relationship does the gear ratio and the drag have?

Larger gear in the lower ratio thus and this is where the drags are located. Larger surface area equals more drag washer area thus more friction and more drag.

The maingear(not pinion) in the lower gear ratio is actually smaller than in the high gear ratio.
The higher gear ratio have a "lower gear ratio" if you look at it from the spool perspective thus it takes less force for it to reach the torque required to make the drag slip with the same drag pressure.

This is because the drag in most reels (musky) are placed after the gear ratio, (from the fishes point of view), if the drag are connected directly to the spool like AVETs drag system, then then gear ratio doesn't affect the drag.
