What method do those of you that use snap weights for trolling use to calculate your running depth of lures? I’ve heard of the 50/50 method and a method using snap weights clipped 20ft in front of the lure. I’m honestly kinda lost on how to figure out where my lure is running with both of these methods. I know what depth the weight runs and have dive curves for lures with unweighted lines but not sure how to actually calculate the running depth of my lure with the weight attatched? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Wow;
W hat an amazing question.
I don't know you from Adam.
Yes snap weights work and I would like to do an indepth article about this as the possibilities are limitless. The Walleye gurus have been doing this for years and I don't believe it's been as common in the Musky fishing realm. Anyway this pic is from today (9-13-207 @ 8:30am) of a 51.25" caught using snap weights. Bottom line is they work and have worked for me.

And you can see clearly the snap weight in the pic also. Doesn't get any better than that.

How much weight? On a 250000 thousand acre lake on the micbigan/canada border that shall remain nameless, i use weights 2-4oz(bell type sinkers) that i split ring to the front side of my leader. It is to keep baits that are running erratic from blowing out of the water.

Todd,
Talking about running 1-6 ounces of lead 20-50ft in front of lure while trolling low speed to increase diving depths. I’ve tried them clipped to the front of my trolling leader with poor results. I’m just looking for a reliable method to calculate the depths like the walleye trollers use?

I’m using the offshore kit with snaps but I’m just trying to figure out how to calculate the running depths my lures are at worth the weights? For example if I’m trolling a depthraider using the 50/50 method. Using the 50/50 chart I know that a 3 ounce weight at 1mph trolled using the chart gives me a weight depth of 30 feet. There is essentially 50 feet of line out, then my 3 ounce snap weight, then 50 feet of line to my depth raider. I know a straight model depth raider gives me a running depth of approximately 10 feet with a 50ft lead. So would my combined running depth with the weight be 40ft @ 1mph?
