Taking a short trip to Vermilion mid July. Will be my first time fishing it. Was looking at staying in Pike Bay, but from what I gather I won't be wanting to fish Pike Bay itself. My question is how long of a run would it be from the back of pike bay out to fishy spots in the main eastern basin?

And since I'm asking, would anybody convince me i should be paying more attention to the west or a central location? I'm running a Tuffy 1760T if that matters.

Any central lodging options that allow for 3 night stays at under 150 per night that would be recommended?

Like 5 minutes in a moderately fast boat. No big deal.

Thanks Kirby. I'm guessing Pike Bay must be relatively hazard free and a straight shot out and back is simple enough then?

Thanks,

Yeah you won't have a problem. The whole thing is shallow, but hazards are marked good. Lots of people stay in there, so you're not out of the norm. Plenty of good spots in the area too.

I stayed on Pike Bay a few years ago. Easy travel to big bay and as Kirby says hazards are well marked. Saw first fish of the trip at the mouth of Pike Bay. Lots of fish close but if its windy be prepared for decent sized rollers.

Trancheff's cabins are right there at the junction of east and west.

Fortune Bay Casino is 30 bucks a night to camp and is west of Pike bay and just south east of Tancheffs. Can get Hotel deal and nice marinia and food. West end generally better early season bite for skies in my opinion depending on water temp of course.

Once in a while, you will see old logs floating around the bay.
I've seen a couple around Hoo Doo point.

Thanks for the info guys. I ended up getting a spot at Trancheff's Cabins July 12-15. Looking forward to giving big V a shot, though I'm sure I'll wish my stay was longer.

bucknuts - old floating logs? What's the connection there?

Thanks,

Tucker

Trancheff's has boat houses to park your boat. One time i was looking down in the water and seen what at the time thought was a horizontal support beam between two support posts. My kids would catch alot of panfish in the boat houses. The next day that long support beam wasnt there. That was a big fish. I measured 52" pole to pole and it went past them. The people there are very nice.

So it had to have been at least 6-7 feet right?

Since we were technically rock bass fishing at the time, the exaggeration formula does work out to that yes.

6 to 7 foot muskies sound good to me. I was hoping to catch a big one though.
The owner sounded very nice. We chatted quite a while on the phone when I called to reserve the cabin. Very accommodating with a less than a week stay as well which is hard to find at resorts on lakes.
