I make muskier size Bombers and I use Poplar from Home Depot easy to work with, also square stock from red cedar would work. For tools I purchased a set of turning knifes from Harbor Freight the all set was under 50.00, they are not the best but they are working fine for me, I do not turn hard wood. with them

I use cedar for all of my topwaters. I prefer to turn hard woods but they are not conducive to making topwaters. You will need a roughing gouge, a thumbnail gouge for detail and a parting tool for making shoulders. You can get a number of starter sets. I mean no offense to Gino but wouldn't cheap out on tools. The difference in price mostly has to do with the type of steel used for the tool. You get what you pay for. If you can I would look at a carbide. You pay for it but they basically eliminate sharpening your tools.

For lures this day I use a duplicator with a carbide cutter. Bit that is for putting out numbers. For every thing else ( one offs , tool handles , bowls , ect. I use a set of tools bought at woodcraft.

No offence takenTrophyseeker50, thanks for sharing. I just build muskie baits as a hobby, someday I will buy a set of Sorby turning gouges, now that I kind know what I am doing
Thank You

I have a couple blanks made up now. What way do either of you prefer to seal your baits before painting?

I use a all bunch of stuff, but there are two I use more often Deft sanding sealer, saltwater guys use it. Dip in Deft let it dry and light sanding. I also use Devcon-2 ton 30 minutes, thinned out with denatured alcohol, brush it on.
Both work great I like Deft because it dryes in about 20 minutes, it's fast
I purchase Deft at Amazon.com, sometime you may find it at Lowes
Deft I do 3 coats Devcon 2 coats

How much denatured alcohol do you use when using the devcon 2 ton epoxy?

About 6 drops of alcohol to 3 ml. of hardener and resin mix, just enough to thin out the mix. There is no fixed amount, you do not want it to runny. After a while you will know. I never had a problem even if is made too thin. Make sure the amount of resin and hardner is the same by volume. I use syringes from Flex coat you can purchase from Jan net craft or Mud Hole.
For clear top coat the best for me is Flex Coat it's more expensive than other clear top coat but very easy to work, and has beautiful clear finish
Here is a list that I use for clear topcoat
A Flex Coat Mud Hole and Jan Net Craft
B Thinned out Dervcon 2-ton 30 minute
C Envirotex lite Menard has it
D Parks clear coat at Home Depot
Glad to be of help

I almost forgot
If you do not have a way to turn your baits once is clear coated, than use Devcon 2-ton and just flip your baits the first 30 minutes couple of times. You can build a bait turning wheel using a rotisserie motor

Im almost ready to dive in but one more question I have drilled a hole through the center of the lure and one for the hook ive work with epoxy before and am wondering if just fill the whole with epoxy or if there is a sealer with more of a liquid property that i could just dunk the lure in and have it soak up?

I have yet to make a lure but I've been turning about 10 years You will never regret getting the best turning tools you can afford A good sharpening system is a great investment as well. Also always wear a full face shield. A chunk of wood flung from the lathe is pretty scary. I look forward to seeing your work.

get a speed controller for your lathe and turn the bait on there after sealing and topcoating. also get a set of mini carbide turning tools.

super slow

Kodiak how would I do such a thing to my wood lathe? Seems like a great idea I just wouldn't know where to start with that kind of modification.
