My friends and I are in Pittsburgh for college and we are die hard fisherman. We wanted to know if anybody has heard of 2 lakes named, Raccon Lake, and Arthur Lake. We heard that there are Musky but we aren't sure how the lakes history is. If anybody knows any information about these lakes please post, or if you know any good lakes around Pitt please post. Thank you

if you're looking for musky lakes it'll be a long drive. Lake Arthur is about an hour and a half away, and it is a very difficult place to fish. There's big ones in it for sure, though. Don't know too much about Raccoon Lake. Northwest PA (2.5+ hours away) has the best musky lakes in the state.

There are a lot of folks that know a lot more about SW PA muskies than me, but for what it's worth...
Raccoon probably has stocked tiger muskies. How many? Who knows. It might be worth a try if it is convenient. Arthur is stocked each year, but it is a tough nut to crack. Beautiful but hard. The water is dark and the pressure is--in my judgment--intense. You should see it on a Sunday afternoon in summer. Boats everywhere. A 50" ski was caught there last June. But the fish see a lot of presentations and are resistant.
If you go to Arthur, try and go during the work week. There is a Fishing Hotspots map on the place. It would help you get a handle on it.
It is true that the best shot at a musky is in the Northwest part of the state.
Good luck.

Your best bet will be the Allegheny River.

Not sure what type of boat you were planning on getting at lake arthur, but I called up there and its $100+ for the day for a motorboat with bench seats (not great for muskie fishing). It's $250 for a nicer boat. If you were going the $250 route I would suggest doing a guided trip on the allegheny river with Red Childress of http://www.alleghenyguideservice.com/.
More scenic, less traffic, nicer boat, better musky water for both size and numbers. Not to mention you are out there with somebody who has a wealth of knowledge and is willing to share it. I'm only saying this because I went with him before and think if you are willing to shell out some bucks to fish then this is the best way to do it.
No matter what you decide to do catch a big one ( catch, photo, release) and report back to brag a bit!! good luck

Here is a good article to read giving an overview of some of the best musky fishing in the area.

http://www.fish.state.pa.us/pafish/musky/ab_articles/2003may_jun/00...

Your best bets will be a bit north.
