After seeing all of the baits from Steves coverage of the Chi Town show, and they were really impressive... but... Who on this site pays $50-$150 for one Lure ??
I haven't spent $100 for lures in the last 2 years and still catch fish on lures that are 7-8 yrs old and I didn't have to take a loan out on. So.... are these new lures/baits worth the big bucks ? will they put more fish in your boat ? What's your thoughts?
Nice job on covering the show Steve, Slammer.

It is pretty amazing how much lures cost. But walking around the Musky Shop last year I noticed how many were $40 and up. A lot of lures over $40. But then many are low volume production lures and the maker needs to get a pretty good price to make it worthwhile.

I believe you'd be better off with 10 lures that have stood the test of time vs. 100 lures that are hot off the presses. Every once in a while somebody comes up with something "new" that puts a few more fish in the boat than your ordinary whatever-it-is. That's the exception, and not the rule though. Most of the time this years "gotta have it" lure is all over the swap tables next year and the year after that when guys realize that the 2 beers they can buy with that money will provide them with more enjoyment.

It helps if you know the bait maker, or if you've ever tried to make your own hard lures. Hand formed, hand painted lures should bring a bigger price. Plastic, mass produced, machine made lures and bucktails catch fish too.

<p>If it’s a handmade especially wood lure it’s different than a molded or injected. I am sure that components are way up and also somewhat scarce for some. You have to look too at how much time does it take to make. For some I am willing to pay more for if the process to make it is time consuming or they are especially gifted builders, painters etc. It is no different than any other sport or hobby. You can spend big $ on anything. Cars , Jewelry, Food, Clothes, …..</p><p>The great thing is there are many choices and you don’t have to buy big money lures. Go with the bargain bin. </p><p>Go price a boat or car. They aren’t what they were 10 years ago. </p>

That's one of the benefits of being our age, Todd. Our chance at being cool expired about the time we had to start packing Advil to go on a fishing trip.

Any bait is 'worth' what people, in general, will pay for them. I needed a quart of semi-synthetic oil yesterday. One quart was priced from $3.65 to $9.50. All 5w30 semi-synthetic.

Yet there's folks emptying their wallets... set the price at what the market will bear..

That said... and as much as I'd like to own a particular "mega" bait. I just can't justify the cost v. how often I'd actually use it..

Does anyone know the cost of 19 oz. of plastisol, and the associated cost of putting it all through the actual lurebuilding process??

I believe alot of it is people think they can buy success. It's very common in newer anglers or anglers who don't get out alot. You also have a lure maker putting out videos showing how you have to have this new, way overpriced bait. But they do catch fish on it- and people eat it up regardless the obvious over price. Its worth whatever people pay, but some people are suckers, and some prey on that.

Some folks pay $100+ for a bottle of wine to enjoy with dinner. I don't but some do. I guess something to consider is if you are buying that $90 lure with a credit card you are carrying a balance on, you are not just paying the $90, you are paying double digit interest on that purchase as well. Working in banking for many years, always shocked me to see people with lower middle-class jobs paying $1,000-$2,000 a month in credit card interest. And a lot of times it was because they had no impulse control.
Friend of mine had a great idea for how to approach high temptation events like a musky show. He would set the very top of what he could reasonably spend at the show, then get the cash from the ATM and leave his credit cards in the truck. Cash is gone, he's done. But, if something at the show was something he had been looking for and was an unexpected bargain he could walk to the truck and come back.

The difference between baseball cards and muskie lures is that a few more muskie lures get wet.

Some people collect things, even if they justify their collection as practical. Have fun with your money. No skin off my nose if people buy expensive baits. For me, they are tools, but not necessarily for everyone.

Yeah, $70 for a soft plastic lure is too much for this guy. Although I completely understand if supply is limited and people are willing to pay that... more power to him.

i always find it amusing when people pay 100K for a boat, 80K for a truck, 1K for rod and reel combos, but are confounded by $100 lures and the price of gas.

I hope the custom market continues to grow. There are guys making truly works of art.

Can I catch a fish with a line, bobber, split shot & hook? Maybe stick some bait on the hook?

Fishing is basic, anglers & companies make it complicated and expensive.

I didn’t pay anywhere near that much for all my stuff. And a boat and truck get you to and from the lake for years. The tail that rips off by a pike for $70 just doesn’t make sense. Crank baits are another story. Those can last for many years and can certainly be worth the money.

Right on Kirby. Sure, maybe professional fisherman have that much invested but I own a used Ranger I paid less than $20K for, a 2006 truck that is paid for, and I live within 5 minutes of the river so gas is minimal. But yeah, help me, I'm poor. I'd buy another Headlock or Mattlock but a soft plastic, no thanks.

I am thinking that seminars are focusing on electronics because people are spending money on that equipment and looking for ideas on how to get their money's worth. I know I upgraded my trolling motor and my bow mount to an Ulterra and a Gen 4 Helix Mega SI/DI last spring and while I really like both and have learned a fair amount about using the tech, much more I could be doing with the equipment. Technology has made huge gains in the last five years, seems reasonable that folks would focus on that.

I was talking to a musky fisherman I know who casts and trolls. He uses ( 1 ) bait, yes just 1. It isnt even a bucktail. It's a crankbait. Different colors of course. A $25 mass produced plastic lure. He said he caught 17 this year. Take that for what it's worth!!!

First hard-core musky fisherman I ever met in my life story:
Before I became obsessed or even slightly educated on Musky Fishing I was working on this fellows large new house, he was never around but his Mrs. always was, super nice gal. One day after they moved in I saw a bunch of Heavy Tackle by the main door. He swung by quick to drop some items off for the house and I had to ask em about the tackle. Long chat short, dude grew up with Steve Suick and remained friends ever since. He had the tackle by the door because the next day he was leaving to camp and fish LOTW with Steve and some others. He had multiple ( I assume Lakewood mediums) packed with nothing but Suick Thrillers. Said he's never switched it up nor did he want to. He was kind enough to give me a prototype unweighted Red Hot cuz Steve gave him plenty.
That same bait actually put my very first Musky in my hands. Haven't had a follow on it since. So like u said, for what it's worth.

As far as that $70 dollar I assume the "Ultra Dog" goes: Duuuuuuuuh.
Thing has high demand and as of now 0 availability. They know darn well alot of fisherman following the mindsets of "I gotta get it now before it goes out of stock" or "Something the fish haven't seen before, I gotta throw it first before everyone else is" or " F*** it why not, I didnt drive all the way here to leave emptied handed" Is going to pay that price. They had to build new tooling, new dies, new packaging, establish a surplus to stock retailers. They're going to try to cover the investment as quick as possible.
They'll drop in price eventually, I mean the 2lber is $35. Less Demand on those of course, but I'm sure after the initial rush, they'll come down.

A great triggering technique for a following musky is to speed up the lure and make it seem harder to get. It works even better for selling musky baits.

The more expensive lures are the more retrievers I sell...
However, in the spirit of fish will hit just about anything that moves. I came up with a experimental lure years ago, and it's cheap! However it only comes in 1 color, natural. It's caught a number of trout and walleye on the troll as well as vertical jigging. No muskie hook ups yet.

I fish better with value-priced lures that I'm not too afraid to lose. Therefore I picked up six "Original" 6-in Phantoms in Canadian Crush and Hot Perch for 13.97 at Sportsman's. I swap the rear hook sometimes for a 5/0 4x VMC Inline single with grub to get a swimbait or softail look on a budget. Plus the "original" has better hook, split ring and retains the hook collar on lure belly vs newer softails from same order. So older stuff can be cheaper and better made too.

Must not be very good at investing, since the Dow Jones has risen 35% since the last election. Not bad for a 14 month period. S&P has also hit record highs. Think you could buy a lure or two with those kind of returns.

Some people prefer to drive the beat up rusty trucks and others choose to drive a new truck. Both will get you to your destination. To each their own. I enjoy collecting lures so I don’t have a problem spending a little more for quality.

Some of the lures that fetch big bucks, not sure if you call them works of art or great examples of fine craftsmanship but they certainly are worth collecting.

I got back into muskie fishing about 5 years ago after a 20 year hiatus. At this stage, I'm slowly updating the more "entry-level" gear I bought when I started back up. So I'm not so much into collecting baits as I am into turning a 8'6" bargain rod into a 9'6" Thorne Predator that does just what I need. That's worth a few Ultra Dogs. Yeah, I've got the money to collect baits, but I have other priorities.

I don't begrudge anyone their enjoyment of collecting baits. I hope it makes them/you happy as hell to view that wall of joy. Cheers!

My favorite warm water LSC trolling baits didn't cost ten bucks when I bought them. Won out in a taste test against some of the best and famous LSC trolling lures. Some baits are worth the price some aren't. What can the bait do that a cheaper one can't? That's the question.

The 70 dollar price tag on the Ultra Dawg and monster swimming Dawg is interesting.

Twice that of a mammoth curly sue, despite all 3 lures being made in the USA and the 2 MI lures are a bit smaller.

It is baisicaly the same price as the european big soft swimbaits (mel mamma shad, eastfield viper 40cm) so im guessing that's where the inspiration for the price came from.

Just think of that price tag as a way to prevent a lot of shoulder surgeries down the road.

I used to catch quite a few muskies on Rad Dogs and Inhalers. I still do, but I used to, too.

That said, Supernatural makes an awesome lure.

Off the lure price topic, but the price of reels seems to be making the hop I expected as well. Abu Garcia Beast went from $300 to $330. Tranx from $300 to $310 or $500 to $520. The Daiwa Lexa HD seems to be holding steady, but that may be because they are being phased out in favor of the Prorex and/or the Lexa TW (how many different lines of heavy duty reels does one company usually keep in production at once?). The Tekota A seems to be going up from $210 to $220 as well.

Time to pull the trigger for me at places that haven’t restocked at the new prices, I guess.

I wonder how much inflation went up in the Fishing/Hunting world in the past year ?

Highest inflation in 40 years and not looking good for 2022... I hope I'm wrong.

As a small business owner, I had to raise my prices by 11 % over last year just to pay for the increased Labor and higher material costs.

I think labor costs will be higher. Work force has shrunk. 20 years ago, economists were predicting a short fall in the work force as the baby boomer exited the work force in droves. When I was still working, I was part of a group that helped survey Fond du Lac County employers, getting demographic information on their existing work force and asking for predictions for the next 10 years of what they would need for employees. That started in 2009 when the area was still reeling from the recession and had high unemployment. By the time the data was collected, revised, updated and analyzed 5 years later it showed there would be an absolute shortage of workers by 2020. Not just a shortage of the necessary skills but just bodies. And that is what happened. The baby boom generation was the biggest in history. One cartoon compared it to an elephant traveling through a boa constrictor. Well, a few years ago that boa started pooping us out and there simply are not enough new workers to replace us. Further compounded by the pandemic. In our region a lot of folks that had been in the hospitality industry, not making a lot of money got laid off or had their hours cut. They found out there were much better paying, full time jobs with benefits in manufacturing even in the northwoods. Some of the bars and restaurants can't quite grasp the idea that there are not a lot of workers looking for minimum wage, part time jobs. (I know you paid well before H20)

They are calling it "the great resignation"...

A lot of boomers were riding out their last few years when the pandemic hit. It was only a matter of time for those folks anyway. But many of older gen x'ers went the same route. The pandemic made them realize just how much of life they had given up for their jobs, which in hindsight weren't all that great to begin with. Still others like N08 was referring to realized that the jobs they had before the pandemic pretty much sucked, and the pay did too.

A supper club in our area, owned by our state assemblyman has been advertising for a head/lead cook for at least 5 months. The add states you must be willing to work all holidays and weekends. Can't understand why folks are not standing in line to apply. The local technical college, five miles from the supper club, has a well-regarded culinary arts program. Another supper club, on the other side of Rhinelander has managed to keep their staff including many older wait staff by in part closing on Sunday. They have given up that day but kept staff and are very busy the other six days of the week. Same thing when they opened a Hobby Lobby in the area. Because they close on Sunday, tons of applicants while the WalMart across the street struggled to find staff. Wonder if that may be the future of retail. Cut back in hours.

I'm a retired boomer (I had to retire early due to a work related head injury) I'm only 61. I just bought a couple 12" DDD for 37 bucks a pop and a 59 dollar Baby Beaver XL. I'm done I just need some hooks and a couple tube harnesses.
A couple years ago I bought a bucktail Twister and I found a bunch bucktail hair in my stuff so now I got to learn how to put bucktail on coils.

I do own a couple of those expensive baits, nothing over 100. I only have a handful but the reason I bought them is because I would much rather my money go to a guy or two who is building these things by hand instead of buying baits off of an assembly line. Not that there is anything wrong with with buying a top raider, but I like that when I bought a LL water chopper that it went to someone who helped get me into musky fishing and makes the stuff himself. You also get way better customer service it seems like with these small guys. Perfect example is last year I had a fish on vermilion (would have been pb I’m still mad about) break the spreader bar on a bombsquad big flap tail on the hook set. Talked to the guys at Thorne and they just gave me a new bait and said that bombsquad had pretty much a lifetime warranty on the baits so if anything else happened to it that I’d get it replaced again. Who knows if the baits catch more fish but it makes me a little more confident that most likely the guys around me aren’t throwing the same thing.
