caught this 38"er ... I think it is a hybrid..100% no doubt to me... a DNR biologist wanted to see the pic so I sent it to him and he told me he couldn't be sure... rounded fins to me are a dead give away..thoughts/opinions?

Looks like a tiger. Did you happen to count the lower jaw pores?

that pore thing is kinda iffy too.. a hybrid can have 5-7, a true 6 to 9

ok so let's say it had 6 or 7... could be either... rounded bottom fins on the fish I caught, plus the rounded back fin, plus the coloring to me says tiger no doubt

I would guess tiger as well, based on color and rounded top fin. However, if you look at the tail and then look at the tail in the graphic from the DNR, you can see why the biologist might have some reservations. Scientists tend to be very cautious.

Does the lake you caught it stock em? I've caught a couple very much like that in a lake that has no history of ever stocking tigers and I highly doubt they reproduce in the lake, so I've always wondered if they were tigers.

Its a Hybrid. Usually catch 1-2 a year in Madison not very many of them anymore here, have had a couple in years past that look very similar to that one. Very pretty fish.

This is the first fish I've seen that isn't obvious [to me] whether it's a tiger or not.

Looks more like a leopard than a tiger.

Just sayin'...

I think it's a hybrid, too.

Great looking fish and yes it is a hybrid. It has been said that hybrids are sterile but I have also heard that it is possible that some can reproduce? With that being said, could this be a cross between a hybrid and a true?

Yes its a hybrid. I use to catch some there on yellow lures with black spots, kind of similar to the famous 5 diamonds pike pattern. .

My guess is natural hybrid crossed from one of your stocked leechers/pike. Again, just my guess as to that beautifully marked fish.

I say yes, and agree with Schillinger on it being a cross with a spotty. That said are there big enough spotties in there yet that the fish could even be an offspring of one?

Tiger/hybrid for sure 100%. Rounded pike fins. Broken stripes and pretty as can be as always! Nice fish.

I think its a pure, and a beautifully marked pure at that. Tale fin is pointed not rounded. I've seen muskies that look like that one in central illinois lakes that are stocked only with pure muskies. Those same lakes have no pike in them.

The markings on the tail are a dead give-a-way from what I have seen. Awesome Tiger man.

Heres mine. one of my most memorable catches. 2" shad rap, 8# test, no leader and on a bass rod. had to drive the tiller to the fish a number of times to prevent line from breaking and I took it from my buddy who had and lost it a couple hours earlier. caught 3 like this that year 42-44" in a lake never known to stock them and I haven't caught another in many, many fish since on that lake.
