Uhhh, actually that would be a new world record on the fly (not an overall world record, there are divisions for such things, separated by line class and method). I think Brad Bohen in Hayward, WI owns the record (pending this fish) with a 51.25" in 2008 (36lb tippet).

So, I am curious then.....? Do they go by "largest fish from a fly"(cause there have been much larger fish caught on flys before) or largest by muskie? Because what if I said I caught that musky on a bass rod. Or an ice rod Would I get some kind of "new world record musky on a bass rod? No, I would not. I understand its a fly rod.... but it is still a rod... why would that matter what type of "rod" he caught it on. Shouldn't the world record just be the world record?
My little 7 year old sister has a 44" musky on a bright pink barbie rod. So she should have the "world record musky caught by a barbie rod right?
Am I the only one that thinks differentiating world records based on rod style is stupid?

The quote says "new world record musky caught on a fly rod " which it is. It's arguably poor phrasing, but not untrue. (Obviously this is assuming they bother to submit it and it passes muster with NFFHOF or IGFA)

What it has to do with it? The governing bodies recognize records in all kinds of different categories--line class, power trolling, fly, catch and release, etc. It's a world record by the method/tackle. They also recognize an overall world record which is heaviest ever caught. Each body has it's own rules and categories. IGFA and NFWFHOF would be the applicable bodies here (that I know of).

It matters because it's awesome and catching a musky on a fly is hard, and this being an unusually large fish makes it even better! It was Ben Olsen's boat according to Thorne Bro's FB. Very cool catch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

--- ??? I am honestly just curious what a fly rod has to do with "world record status"?
I get what you're saying, one could stick a Calcutta with 100lb braid on a fly rod and rig a sucker up on a quick set.
I doubt the angler was too concerned about records, though. It's not like you win a prize or anything. There's like a hundred different world record muskies, like Tyler said, 2lb line, 4lb line, 6lb line, tip up, etc.

On KARE 11 news, the quoted the angler as saying that he credited guide Ben Olson's knowledge of the lake, for putting him on the fish. Pretty obvious they were targeting muskies.

One thing is for sure, somebody will always be upset when someone catches a big fish.
penis envy
Don't care what the angler caught it on that's a great fish!

Hey all, Thanks for the kind words! Sorry but too tired for the whole story... the angler who caught her is an amazing fly angler and owner of bob mitchell's fly shop, Robert Hawkins. This fish is a collaboration between myself and the guys who taught me to tie and cast flies. All I did was take them to the right spot! We all got lucky!!! The entire catch from eat to bag to bump/girth was filmed on three different go pros including Robert's head cam!! Footage is amazing! I'm sure he'll get it out in short order! I'm always struck by overwhelming gratitude when great things happen in my fishing/outdoors. None of the three of us(Amazing fly tier Gabe Schubert was the third coconspirator) believe that giant fish and giant catches are the work of one person. When one of these giants get posted we should all be proud!! It makes no difference if they are records or who caught them or how they were caught. We are all working off those who came before. We haven't invented anything or done anything new. We all feed off each other and history. We may tweak this or that or apply a method differently but it all came from somewhere/someone else! You all had a hand in this! I've mined countless gems out of this community! Be proud when you see a giant posted here! It means that we, as a community, are being good stewards of our resources! It means that we have learned from the past and advanced the sport we love. It means that we live in an amazing place and time...that grown men can get this worked up and spend our time and money chasing a silly fish! It means that we still have an awful lot of freedom. So thank you! Thanks to the person/people who let this fish go over the years! Thanks to the folks who fought to stock them and maintain them. Thanks to all the diehards and burnt out guides who put in all those hours figuring these things out! Thanks to our own curmudgeonly ex guide turned tech mogul, sworall, for giving us this forum! As long as giant fish are posted then quickly questioned on M1st.....all is right with the world as far as I'm concerned!!!

Ben Olsen is one of the classiest human beings and best sticks I've ever met. This kind of catch coming from his boat doesn't surprise me one bit. Very proud of these guys. To the angler who stuck this big girl. Nice job!

That is a great fish!! Congrats to Robert Hawkins and Ben Olsen.
I am hoping that the angler can come on here and explain his unique fly rod set-up. It doesn't appear to have a reel seat and the reel is taped to the rod which looks to be more like a baitcasting style rod. Not a conventional fly rod as most of think when we hear fly rod.
This is defiantly a unique set up by the angler so I would like to hear the details about it.
Very cool fish and again congrats to both angler and guide.

Congrats to the captor on a stunning fish. As others have said, would be interested to know more about the setup used. Was it taken on a floating or sinking line?

His rod has floating line on it from the picture.
Maybe but I'm pretty sure he's got some sort of sink tip especially fishing a bit deeper. Most fly guys will use 40-60# tieable/flexible wire. If I had to guess I would say he's using a type 3 or type 6 line which will sink 3" to 6" per second. Unless your fishing really weeded and shallow areas most guys use a type 3-6 line. Add in a 50# butt section and 36" of wire or fluorocarbon leader and your good to go. I myself went from a 10# rod to 12# Rod so it's way less fatiguing throwing big flies.

The field & stream story says he was using a 30 ft sink tip line but the photo of him with the fly rod shows what obviously appears to be a floating line.
I am not sure what to believe with the inconsistencies.

There is no way to tell the difference between a floating and sinking line from a picture. Unless he named the brand and the weight and the year it was made.

I checked with Captain Obvious on this one and he suggested calling the store to confirm directly with the person who caught the fish regarding equipment, materials, and techniques used.

He does however feel it would be bad form to ask for the GPS coordinates of the spot the fish was caught at.

How is it obviously a floating line??? The only inconsistency has been in these responses. Here you go: the reel is a tibor. The rod is a custom built tfo. The line is scientific anglers wet tip express in 550gr. The leader was 6' of maxima chameleon 40# to 40 misfit predator wire. The fly was tied using two partridge predator hooks(not sure on size) connected by Blaine chocklett articulating shanks. Any other inconsistencies?

Clearly the leader was not 6 feet, the photo clearly shows it is 5' 11.75".

WOW! This is an unbelievable accomplishment! To catch a fish that size on conventional tackle is like a once in 1,000 lifetime achievement, but to do it on a fly rod is almost incalculable. I have a 500gr. sink tip on my 11wt. and casting that is like casting a tow chain (let alone a 550 gr.). Just catching a musky on a fly rod is hard enough and truly an achievement, but a fish that size is unreal. I would probably sell all my Musky Fly gear after catching that fish, because where do you go from there?
Congratulations to the angler! I think a replica of that monster would be a great addition to his fly shop.

call him if you want to know. I just stumbled into his shop last week or so looking for a new source of bucktails. He couldn't be nicer. I didn't even know about his fish till I asked why he had so few tails. He said he had a big run on them after the news. I told him I had no clue what he was talking about he showed me the video. He had the fly out to see if that's your thing.

Congrats to Ben and the boys! What a fish and on a whipping stick too. Youse "wind whippers" did good!
I'm not a fly rodder, but for those of you that would like to become on for muskies should avail yourself of Robert Tomes magnificent book "Muskies on a Fly"!
